These street lights feed on trash for power

From designer Haneum Lee comes a concept that could see streets lit while keeping trash off of them, too. At the base of every street light is a wastebasket that turns what it can use into compost, while using methane gas to generate the power needed to keep the lights on.
It's an interesting thought, to be sure — one that may not work so well in suburban or rural areas. It could do wonders in a city such as New York City, though, where there are full trash cans on every corner. Check out more in the gallery below.
Joule Bio’s patented bugs turn sunlight into biodiesel

You might have heard about harnessing the power of algae to make biofuels, but the team at Joule Biotechnologies decided started from scratch — by redesigning the organisms themselves.
They genetically engineered organisms that use photosynthesis to directly create the molecules that form the basis of diesel. Their SolarConverter array system suspends these organisms in a solution within a light-permeable structure that looks something like a solar panel array. Point these arrays at the sun, and the critters turn carbon dioxide and sunlight into biodiesel. They expect their first plant to be online by 2011.
Unlike traditional biofuels, like ethanol, the SolarConverter requires no farmland to grow the corn or other feedstock. In fact, the sunnier and more "useless" the land, the better.
Beyond fueling long-distance trucks, you could picture this system sitting beside large-scale solar farms or wind farms. Joule-biodiesel-powered generators could provide the green energy needed to cover the times of day when the sun doesn't shine and wind doesn't blow.

La chatarra electrónica es uno de los grandes problemas de los diferentes gobiernos del mundo y muchos de ellos están, poco a poco, empezando a preocuparse por ella. En Argentina el viernes y el sábado se estará realizando la segunda edición de una campaña que tiene como fin recolectar toda esta basura.
Todos aquellos que queramos deshaceros de nuestros viejos gadgets podremos asistir a una de las cinco plazas que estarán disponibles (Parque Chacabuco, Plaza Teniente Gral. Mitre, Plaza Colombia, Plaza Noruega y Parque Presidente Nicolás Avellaneda) entre las 10 y 18hs.
Estos serán los productos que podrán llevar: ordenadores, laptops, monitores, teclados, ratones, impresoras, fotocopiadoras, decodificadores, módems, HUBs, switches, teléfonos celulares, centrales telefónicas, faxes, videocaseteras, lectores de DVDs, equipos de música y televisores.
Desde acá apoyamos esta iniciativa y les pedimos a todos aquellos que quieran deshacerse de dispositivos electrónicos que vayan a alguna de las plazas porque estos productos, para ser desechados, necesitan un tratamiento especial y dejarlos en la calle para que el recolector se los lleve contamina notablemente el medio ambiente.
Eso sí, si llueve mejor que te quedes en casa porque se suspenderá.
